BBVA Compass, Houston Dash team with Rebuilding Together to aid local family
HOUSTON, April 24, 2014 -- BBVA Compass volunteers and Houston Dash soccer players gave new life to an East End family's home today as part of a joint effort to revitalize the vibrant neighborhood around BBVA Compass Stadium.
The home renovation is for the BBVA Compass and Dynamo Charities' Building a Better Houston initiative, and was completed in partnership with Rebuilding Together Houston. The latter is a community outreach organization that works to preserve affordable homeownership and revitalize neighborhoods.
This was the bank's third annual renovation through the Building a Better Houston initiative, and the first for the Dash, the city's new women's professional soccer team.
"With BBVA Compass Stadium sitting in the heart of the East End, the neighborhood has become a special place for the bank," said BBVA Compass South Texas Regional Wealth Management Executive Karen Dixon. "Today's volunteers have given the Rincons' home a new life, and we know they'll enjoy it for many years to come."
After a kickoff ceremony, approximately 50 volunteers — including Dixon, former Dynamo player and Dash Managing Director Brian Ching, and the entire Dash team — painted, cleaned up landscaping and made small repairs to the Rincon family's home.
"We love working on community initiatives in conjunction with BBVA Compass," Ching said. "As one of our most important partners, they are just as committed to giving back to the community as we are. This project is important and allows us to positively impact a hard-working family that has made the East End its home for many years."
The Rincons purchased their home more than 20 years ago, and now have two grandchildren who attend the East End's Rusk Elementary School, where BBVA Compass and the Dash will host a soccer clinic for students next month. The home improvements, some of which were completed earlier, were made through a donation from the BBVA Compass Foundation. Those repairs included the installation of new plumbing, windows and screen doors.
The Building a Better Houston initiative began in 2012. Multiple events are held throughout the year as part of the initiative, such as financial education events and soccer clinics. On July 26, the BBVA Compass Dynamo Charities Cup will be played at BBVA Compass Stadium, and will help fund the initiative's Business of Sports program for local high school students in the fall.
