2013 Scholarship Finalists
Emily Akins Houston Sooners will have the chance to see a lot of Emily Akins as she begins her college years at the University of Oklahoma this fall semester, particularly those who attend OU football games or watch them on television. She’s already a member of the OU Pom squad. “Visiting the campus for the three days of auditions really reinforced my decision to go to OU,” Akins, a 2013 graduate of Clear Lake High School, says. “I am so excited to be representing the university, not only as a student, but also as a spirit squad team member.” Not surprisingly, Emily was a four-year member of her high school’s drill team, the Falcon Flairs, and captain of the unit her senior year. In addition, she spent a decade as a member of the Clear Lake Rockettes competitive dance team, earning numerous special awards including Junior and Senior of the Year. To say that Emily will “hit the ground running” when she arrives in Norman at summer’s end is an understatement. In addition to her responsibilities as an OU pom, she’s already earned 24 hours academically through taking dual credit courses at San Jacinto College. Emily graduated from Clear Lake High School with honors, achieving a 4.52 grade-point average on a 5.0 weighted scale. The daughter of Brian and Kathy Akins, Emily also has definitive plans for her life after college. “The University of Oklahoma is one of the top-rated schools for broadcast journalism, which is my intended field of study,” she says. “Sports marketing is also something that has always interested me.” Houston Sooners, and sports fans across the country, may be seeing a lot of Emily Akins for a long, long time to come.
