McCarty Center
to Host 65th Anniversary Reception and Alumni
Dance

The J. D. McCarty Center for children with developmental
disabilities is 65 years old this year. To mark
the occasion the hospital will host an anniversary
reception on Friday, June 3, from 5-7 p.m. at
their conference center. An alumni dance will
take place from 7-9 p.m. with music provided
by The South 77 Band.
“When you’ve
taken care of children for as long as we have,
you make a lot of friends,” said Vicki
Kuestersteffen, director and CEO of the McCarty
Center.
“The kids and their
families. The staff. Volunteers. Donors and
supporters from the community. We become very
close - like family.”
Kuestersteffen would like
to extend an invitation all current and former
patients and their families, volunteers, donors,
supporters and staff to drop by during this
come and go reception. Tours of the main facility
will be available for those who haven’t
had a chance to visit the hospital since its
move to 2002 East Robinson Street. Welcoming
comments will be made at about 5:30 p.m.
The McCarty Center was
founded by a veterans group called the 40 et
8 of Oklahoma. They started the hospital because
one of their members had a grandson with cerebral
palsy and nowhere in Oklahoma could he find
a place to teach his grandson to walk or talk.
The 40 et 8 created a place that would provide
the physical, occupational, speech and language
therapy that children with developmental disabilities
needed to reach their highest level of functionality
and independence.
In the beginning, the McCarty
Center only treated one diagnosis – cerebral
palsy. Sixty-five years later, the hospital
has treated more than 100 different diagnoses
in the developmental disability category and
has evolved into Oklahoma’s center of excellence
in the care and treatment of children with developmental
disabilities from birth to age 21.
