Zumbathon offers participants the chance to move, groove and give to the J.D. McCarty Center

(Monday, August 23, 2010)

Want to burn calories, break out some dance moves and benefit the J.D. McCarty Center at the same time?

Then grab some comfortable clothes and head to the Zumbathon from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 10 at Crossroads Mall in Oklahoma City.

The Zumbathon features instructors who will lead participants in Zumba fitness, which fuses Latin and international rhythms and basic dance steps into a fun, effective workout.

It’s $10 per person to enter the event and the proceeds will support the programs and services at the J.D. McCarty Center in Norman for children with developmental disabilities. The center specializes in the care and treatment of children with developmental disabilities from birth to age 21.

Zumba has become a popular fitness program after the concept was developed in Colombia in the mid-1990s. It is now taught at more than 60,000 locations in 105 countries, according to the Zumba website, www.zumba.com.

No dance experience is needed to participate.

“The movements are really simple, really repetitive and really easy to follow,” said Joan Livesay, the lead instructor for the Zumbathon.

Zumba is also a lot of fun, she said. “You don’t feel like you’re going to an exercise class,” Livesay said. “It feels like a party.”

Doris Blair, a J.D. McCarty Center employee, is also a Zumba fan after she started the program last year.

It’s a workout that “will really pick your spirits up,” Blair said.

Blair, who is a direct care specialist at the center, suggested hosting a Zumbathon to raise money for the center after noticing different groups in the region that were using Zumba fundraisers. She then teamed up with Livesay, who is a Zumba instructor, to organize the event.

Livesay also has a connection to the J.D. McCarty Center after her daughter, who has Down syndrome, visited the facility. Livesay said she is impressed with the staff at the center and how they work to meet the needs of the families who come there.

Livesay and Blair said the Zumbathon is an opportunity for people to come together to support the J.D. McCarty Center, learn more about Zumba and have a good time in the process.

Participants should wear comfortable, lightweight clothing and supportive athletic shoes.

The Zumbathon will take place in the southeast upper level entrance of the mall in the former Steve & Barry’s space. It will also feature a silent auction that includes gift cards to workout programs.
