14th Annual Norman
Conquest Set for Saturday July 18th
Conquer the Hills.
Conquer the Heat. The Norman Bicycle League's
14th annual Norman Conquest bicycle tour will
be held Saturday, July 18. Registration and
packet pick up will be held Friday, July 17
from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. or on Saturday morning
beginning at 6:00 a.m. with the ride starting
at 7:30 a.m. The ride will begin and end at
the J. D. McCarty Center located at 2002 East
Robinson Street in Norman.

The Norman Conquest offers
four routes for riders to choose. The first
route is a 10-mile family tour through the city
of Norman. The second route is a 22-mile ride
with some hills. The third route is a 46-mile
course that is considered hilly. The fourth
route is the 66-mile very hilly course that
the Norman Conquest has become known for among
bicycle enthusiasts in this region of the country.
Proceeds from the Norman
Conquest will go to support the Camp ClapHans
scholarship endowment fund. Camp ClapHans is
a summer camp project of the J. D. McCarty Center.
"We pleased to once again be a part of
this regional cycling event," said Uwe
von Schamann, director of development for the
McCarty Center. "Proceeds from this event
will help to fund all or part of a child's camp
tuition for Camp ClapHans."
The cost to participate
for a single rider is $25. The cost includes
a Polar Bottle® and lunch. After July 10,
the cost is $30, which includes lunch, but does
not guarantee a Polar Bottle®. The family
tour is $10, which includes lunch only.
For tandem riders the
cost is $35 which includes two Polar Bottles®
and two lunches. After July 10, the cost is
$40, which includes lunch, but does not guarantee
Polar Bottles®. The family tour for tandem
riders is $15 and includes two lunches.

Following the ride, there
will be a drawing at 12 noon for a new road
bike with 24 gears. There will also be other
door prizes. According to ride coordinator David
Ferguson you must be present to win.
The Bicycle League of Norman
(BLN) promotes recreational riding and touring.
Weekly rides are scheduled by the BLN on Tuesday
and Thursday evenings. On Tuesday, the rides
leave from the northeast corner of Brookhaven
Village. The Thursday rides leave from the south
end of Reeves Park.
The J. D. McCarty Center
is Oklahoma's center of excellence in the care
and treatment of children with developmental
disabilities from birth to age 21. Founded in
1946, the McCarty Center treated only one diagnosis
cerebral
palsy. Today, this pediatric rehab hospital
has treated more than 70 different diagnoses
in the developmental disability category. The
McCarty Center is the only hospital of its kind
in the state of Oklahoma and in an average year
will see children from 70 of Oklahoma's 77 counties.
