Employees Feel
the Love During Employee Appreciation Week
Awards, special
meals, ice cream social, family fun fest and
small activities in between are just some of
the ways that the J. D. McCarty Center for children
with developmental disabilities in Norman showed
its appreciation to its staff for the work they
do on behalf of the special needs patients in
their care.
"The last week in
August was dedicated to providing employees
with small tokens of appreciation," said
Debbie Barrett, director of human resources.
The week began with an employee drawing where
employees could win products and services donated
from the community for this event.
On Tuesday, Gaylan Oliver,
executive chef for the McCarty Center's conference
center, prepared a special luncheon for the
day shift employees, another meal for the evening
shift and finally a special breakfast for the
night shift coming off work on Thursday morning.
"During each of these meals we recognized
employees with state and McCarty Center service
awards," said Barrett.
Heading the top of the
list this year was Barbara Self who was awarded
a 30-year McCarty Center service pin. Self is
a teacher's aide in the high school special
education classroom at the McCarty Center.
Richard Mann, director
of social work, and Linda Darnell, accounts
payable technician, were awarded 25-year McCarty
Center service pins.
Larry Mullins, Dani Ferguson
and Tina Martinez received 20-year McCarty Center
service pins. Martinez, Elizabeth Wilson, Vanelle
Kazimir and Joanne McCurley were awarded 20-year
state service pins.
Dr. Tom Thurston was presented
a 15-year McCarty Center service pin while Kristi
Obermiller was given a 15-year state service
pin.
Receiving 10-year McCarty
Center service awards were Sue O'Hare, David
Higdon and Maria Greenfield. O'Hare and Higdon
also received 10-year state service recognition.
Five-year awards for McCarty
Center service went to Jackson Laizure, Buddy
Morgan, Nathan Peck, Jennifer Jaqua, Vanelle
Kazimir, Bob Gsanger, Joanne McCurley and Doris
Blair. Receiving 5-year state service pins were
Kyle Weatherly, Savanah Barrett, John Knehans,
Amanda Grady, Jaqua, Peck, Morgan and Laizure.
Thursday evening was Family
Fun Fest for the McCarty Center staff and their
families. The evening was dedicated to fun,
games, health education and a silent auction.
Volunteers from the Noble High School Honor
Society manned the games and concession stands.
The McCarty Center will be going tobacco free
beginning January 1, 2009. Proceeds from the
silent auction will be used to assist in the
McCarty Center's tobacco free campaign program.
The J. D. McCarty Center
is Oklahoma's center of excellence in the care
and treatment of children with developmental
disabilities from birth to age 21. When the
McCarty Center was founded in 1946, only one
diagnosis was treated there
cerebral palsy.
Today, the McCarty Center has treated more than
70 different diagnoses in the developmental
disability category. The McCarty Center is the
only hospital of its kind in Oklahoma, and in
an average year will see children from 70 of
Oklahoma's 77 counties. For more information
