McCarty Center
Benefits from Eagle Scout Project
Eric Oliver and
Michael Downs, Eagle Scout candidates from Scout
Troop 217, sponsored by St. Marks Catholic Church
in Norman, completed their Eagle project by
planning, designing, organizing and implementing
a building project at the J. D. McCarty Center
in Norman.
The project was a lakeside
shelter with picnic table. Olivers part
of the project was the shelter. Downs
was responsible for the picnic table. The project
will provide McCarty Center patients, and staff,
a shaded place by the lake to sit, play games
or read.
The idea for the project
came as a result of Oliver contacting Sue OHare,
director of physical therapy at the McCarty
Center, about a possible project. OHares
son Jack and Olivers older brother Todd
had been in Scouts together so there was a connection
to the hospital. After reviewing several project
ideas Oliver and OHare agreed on the lakeside
shelter. Ultimately, the hospital hopes to have
several of these lakeside shelters placed around
the 18-acre lake on the hospitals property.
Oliver and Downs have now
completed all their requirements for Eagle Scout,
the Boy Scouts highest award. Oliver and
Downs, along with seven other members of Troop
217s Fox Patrol, will be awarded their
Eagle Scout badge during a court of honor to
be conducted on Sunday, May 25, at the McFarland
Methodist Church.
Eric Oliver is the son
of Jim and Polly Oliver and Michael Downs is
the son of John and Lisa Downs both of Norman.
Oliver and Downs are seniors at Norman North
High School and will graduate this May. Oliver
will be attending Oklahoma State University.
Downs is still undecided as to where he will
be attending college.
The McCarty Center is Oklahomas
center of excellence in the care and treatment
of children with developmental disabilities
from birth to age 21. When this pediatric rehab
hospital was founded in 1946, it only treated
one diagnosis
cerebral palsy. Today, the
McCarty Center has treated more than 70 different
diagnoses in the developmental disability category.
