Sarah Michner Named Volunteer Coordinator
The J. D.
McCarty Center has recently named Sarah Michner
as volunteer coordinator for the pediatric rehab
hospital in Norman. Michner assumed her new
role on Monday, October 1.
"One of my goals is to develop an ongoing
relationship with individuals and community
groups that I can call on when the hospital
has project needs that can be met with volunteers,"
said Michner. "I'm really looking forward
to meeting and building a volunteer network
for the McCarty Center."
Michner said that she had several volunteer
projects that she needed to work on right away.
The first project is to find a couple of volunteers
to work the clothes closet at the McCarty Center.
The McCarty Center regularly receives donations
of clothing for the kids. Volunteers are needed
twice a month to sort and organize the newly
received clothes.
The next three projects all deal with preparation
for the Christmas season at the McCarty Center.
The first of these projects is to find individuals
or a group to cut out and paint Christmas decorations
from plywood. "We have some existing decorations
that we want more of and can use as patterns,"
said Michner. "We also have some new decorations
that we have patterns for. This project could
actually be divided into two groups with one
group doing the woodwork and another doing the
painting. We would like to have this project
completed by the end of November," she
added.
The next project involves decorating doors inside
the hospital. "Each year many of the staff
members will decorate their office doors,"
Michner said, "but we still have a number
of doors that don't get decorated. We'd like
to see these doors decorated for Christmas too."
The third Christmas season project involves
adopting one of the McCarty Center's six hospital
units and helping them build a golf cart float.
"Each year since moving into our new facility,
we've had a golf cart parade as a part of our
annual lighting party that takes place the first
work day of December," explained Michner.
"Because of the patient load the staff
members in the hospital units could use some
help in building a float. This has become a
very popular part of the evenings activities
that the patients really look forward to seeing."
Michner is originally from Penn Yan, New York.
She is a 2003 graduate of the University of
Connecticut with a degree in sports marketing.
Michner was a varsity soccer player at UConn
where she played center mid fielder She earned
first team All Big East honors her junior and
senior year and was named first team All American
her senior year. She has been with the McCarty
Center for one year. Prior to joining the McCarty
Center Michner was an assistant soccer coach
at Louisville University in Louisville, Kentucky.
Michner's husband, Christian, is the associate
head coach of the University of Oklahoma women's
soccer team.
