McCarty Center Olympics Highlight of Employee Appreciation Month

Olympic medals were handed out to McCarty Center employee teams. Employees were honored for length of service to the hospital and state. Fun and teambuilding was the mantra in August as the J. D. McCarty Center in Norman celebrated employee appreciation month.

"It's important for people to know that their work doesn't go unnoticed," said Debbie Barrett, director of human resources at the McCarty Center, and that they make a difference in someone's life everyday. Employee appreciation month is just one opportunity for us to let our staff know how much we appreciate their efforts. It gives them motivation to get through the tough days at work."

Nine teams of employees squared off in toe-to-toe teambuilding competitions during the McCarty Center Olympics. Volleyball, Frisbee throw, toss across, water balloon shot put, water bucket balance, seltzer melt, roller hockey and not your grandpa's shuffle board were the events contested. Obviously, these were not your standard Olympic games.

The top three teams with the highest medal count were Hospital Unit #1 with six medals, Rehab Black with five medals and tied for third were Hospital Unit #3 and the Admin Teams with four medals.

During an employee appreciation luncheon held during the last week of August, longevity awards were presented to employees for their service to the McCarty Center and state of Oklahoma. During the awards presentation, Joe Sher, chairman of the cerebral palsy commission, the hospital's board of directors, thanked the employees for their service and dedication to the children they served.

Receiving 25-year awards for service to Oklahoma were Elousie Borchers, Dani Ferguson and Debbie Barrett.

Twenty-year awards for service to the hospital and the state were presented to Janet Osborn and Dean Bischoff.

A 15-year hospital service award was presented to Doranne Beavers. Fifteen-year awards for state service were presented to Patti Koeltzow, Maria Greenfield and Chrissy Hancock.

Ten-year hospital service awards were made to Sheila McMichael, Lucy Naugle-Scales, Sandy Atherton, Kristi Obermiller and Bill Logan. Ten-year awards for state service went to Sheila McMichael, Sandy Atherton and Dr. Thomas Thurston.

Five-year awards for both hospital and state service were awarded to Ken Younkin, Michelle Loftus, Michael Hathcock and Sean Zajack. Five-year hospital service awards went to Uwe von Schamann and Lydia Zackery. A five-year award for service to the state went to Iris Reinmann-Philipp.

The J. D. McCarty Center is Oklahoma's center of excellence in the care and treatment of children with developmental disabilities from birth to age 21. The 40 et 8 of Oklahoma founded what is now the McCarty Center in 1946. The 40 et 8 is an honor society within the American Legion. When the hospital was first started it only treated one diagnosis…cerebral palsy. Today, the McCarty Center has treated more than 70 different diagnoses in the developmental disability category.

Slap Shot!
Slap Shot! Kyle Weatherly fights for balance on his roller pad as he makes a shot down the floor past his teammate Lynne Bates. Roller Hockey was one of the team building competitions held during the McCarty Center's Olympic games played during employee appreciation month in August. In the goal is Patrick Grose.

Done!
Done! Admin team members hold their hands out to indicate they have completed the task of removing their socks while balancing a bucket of water on their feet. Bucket balancing was one of several team building Olympic events held during the McCarty Center's employee appreciate month in August. Amazingly, no team got wet during this event. Members of the winning Admin team are (clockwise) Mike Powers, Debbie Barrett, Vicki Kuestersteffen and Cindy Lewis.
