November 10, 2014
November 10
saw 31 hearty SABR members braved the cold to
hear lots of good news. We first welcomed new
member Kevin Fontenot, out of state member Bruce
Stevens and recognized Larry Dierker. We also
celebrated that ROOT TV was up and running as
of this morning so the Houston Astros will be
available on television for 4 million Houstonites
in 2015.
Greg Lucas introduced Rene Cardenas,
an historic spanish speaking baseball broadcaster
for the Dodgers and Astros, who told us of his
far ranging carreer with many broadcasting firsts.
Rene is on the ballot for the 2015 Ford C. Frick
Award and we are rooting for his induction into
the Broadcasters Wing of the Hall of Fame in
Cooperstown this coming summer.
We are pleased to advise that
a number of our members agreed to serve on newly
formed committees for the chapter. They are:
Speakers Committee: Jim Kreuz,
Tony Cavender and Ira Liebman.
Membership Committee: Stan Curtis and Bob Stevens
Meetings and Special Projects Committee: Mike
McCroskey, Tom Plemons, Marsha Frantry and Todd
Farquhavson. This team is to report back to
us possibilities for a Baseball Dinner in 2016.
We could use a few more volunteers
so please let me know how you would like to
serve the chapter.
Matt Rejmaniak showed us a unique
movie on the 1980 Cincinatti Reds where one
of the narrators was our own Bill Brown.
Stan Curtis offered to sign copies
of his recently revised book "Covering
All Bases".
The trivia contest furnished
by Tom White was won once again by our young
champion Ben Brink
