Winter
Wonderland Lives Up to Its
Name
By: Jen Cooper
After a
few days of unseasonably mild
conditions, February 28th
was here to remind us that
winter had not gone away just
yet. Westport Plaza held its
first Winter Wonderland event
benefiting the Pujols Family
Foundation on Saturday and
it was definitely cold. But
it was not just the temperatures
and frigid wind gusts that
set the stage for this event
but around every corner in
the Westport Village you got
another sense of the season.
Intricate
ice sculptures were strategically
positioned all throughout
the plaza, while sculptors
from Ice Visions were doing
live demonstrations all day
of new creations including
Albert Pujols' number 5 over
a base and a chipper penguin.
They also constructed a maze
and slide made out of ice
for the day's attendees to
enjoy. In all, Ice Visions
brought in over 70 tons of
ice to create this winter
stage.
There were
plenty of games and activities
for all the kids to enjoy.
The Slackers game area set
up inside was a popular destination
for those trying to get some
relief from the cold. While
inside they also got to enjoy
the creations of a balloon
artist, caricature artist
and face painters. Outside
there were additional games
as well as carriage rides
around the property.
There was
also plenty of food and hot
drinks available. St. Louis
Bread Company was the destination
for those wanting to warm
up with a free cup of hot
chocolate and Starbucks provided
the hot coffee. Other local
Westport restaurants had booths
set up, including Pujols 5,
Westport Pizza, Dierdorf &
Hart's and the Drunken Fish.
Providing
live entertainment outside
was Radio Disney, Sugarettes
Baton Twirling Teams, Tammy's
Tumbling and Dance Center
and Frilly and Miller. There
was also a snowman mascot
saying hello to everyone and
a special appearance by Fredbird.
In spite
of the cold conditions, over
600 people came out to the
event which raised almost
$3,000 for the Pujols Family
Foundation. A huge thank you
to everyone who came out to
participate, volunteer and
perform. It was great fun
getting to enjoy one last
winter wonderland before the
cold weather gives way to
spring.
